The Woman Playing Water Polo emoji 🤽♀️ shows a woman in a pool with a ball, representing water polo, a fast and physical team sport played in the water. People use it to celebrate female athletes, pool sports, swim team news, and any moment of strong, competitive effort in the water.
What Does the Woman Playing Water Polo Emoji Mean?
The Woman Playing Water Polo emoji means a female athlete playing water polo, a team sport in which players swim, pass, and shoot a ball into a goal while treading water.
The emoji is categorized under People & Body and belongs to the sports and activity group of person emojis. It depicts a woman in the water, usually with one arm raised or reaching for a ball, which captures the signature motion of the game: staying afloat with your legs while your upper body throws, blocks, or shoots.
Because the emoji specifically shows a woman, it is often chosen to highlight women's water polo, whether that means a national team, a college program, a local club, or a friend who plays on the weekend.
Is it only about the sport itself?
No, although literal use is the most common. The emoji also works as shorthand for pool time, swim practice, and anything with an aquatic, competitive feel. It tells the reader that the person is in the water and actively playing, not simply floating or lounging.
What Are the Technical Details of the Woman Playing Water Polo Emoji?
The emoji is a ZWJ (zero width joiner) sequence made of four codepoints: U+1F93D, U+200D, U+2640, and U+FE0F.
Here is how those pieces fit together:
- U+1F93D is the base character, PERSON PLAYING WATER POLO, which was introduced in Unicode 9.0.
- U+200D is the zero width joiner that links characters into a single glyph.
- U+2640 is the female sign, which specifies the woman variant.
- U+FE0F is the variation selector that requests emoji-style display.
The combined sequence has the Unicode name WOMAN PLAYING WATER POLO and entered the emoji standard in Emoji version 4.0. It supports skin tone modifiers, so you can choose a skin tone that fits you or the person you are talking about. The shortcode is :woman_playing_water_polo:.
How Do You Use the Woman Playing Water Polo Emoji?
You use this emoji whenever a message involves women's water polo, a pool game, or a female athlete in aquatic sports.
The most natural placements are sports updates, team announcements, game-day posts, and congratulations. It reads clearly in a caption, a group chat, or a bio line, and it rarely needs extra explanation because the image tells the story on its own.
Example messages
- Practice at 6 a.m. tomorrow, bring your caps and your A-game 🤽♀️
- Our girls just won the regional final in overtime! 🤽♀️🏆
- My sister made the varsity water polo team and I could not be prouder 🤽♀️💙
In each of these, the emoji either replaces the words "water polo" or adds a visual cue to the sentence. You can place it at the end of a line or use it as a standalone reaction to a sports photo.
What Does 🤽♀️ Mean in Texting and on Social Media?
In texting and on social media, 🤽♀️ usually signals that the sender is playing, watching, or celebrating women's water polo.
On Instagram and similar platforms, athletes and clubs add it to match-day posts, photo carousels, and profile bios to identify their sport at a glance. Fans use it in comments to cheer on a player or team. Because water polo is a smaller sport than soccer or basketball, the emoji also works as a quiet in-group signal: people who play or follow the sport recognize it immediately.
In casual chats, the emoji can also take on a playful meaning. Someone might use it to say they are heading to the pool, joking about a splashy, chaotic game, or describing a very physical afternoon in the water.
How Does the Woman Playing Water Polo Emoji Look on Different Platforms?
The emoji appears on all major platforms, but each vendor draws it in its own style, with differences in pool color, cap design, and ball placement.
Support begins with these versions:
- Apple: iOS 10.2+ and macOS 10.12.2+
- Google: Android 7.1+
- Microsoft: Windows 10 Anniversary Update+
- Samsung: One UI 1.0+
- Meta: WhatsApp 2.17.10+
- Twitter: Twemoji 2.3+
Since the glyph is a ZWJ sequence, a very old device or app may not recognize it as a single emoji. In that case, the sender's emoji can appear as the base water polo figure followed by a separate female sign, or as a blank box. Updating your operating system or messaging app usually fixes this.
Which Emojis Pair Well With 🤽♀️?
The best pairings add context about the game, the result, or the mood, such as a trophy, a wave, or a flexed arm.
- 🤽♀️🏆 for a championship or tournament win
- 🤽♀️🌊 for a splashy, high-energy game
- 🤽♀️💪 for strength and training
- 🤽♀️🔥 for an intense match or standout performance
- 🤽♀️👏 for congratulating a teammate
You can also pair it with other sport emojis when posting about a multi-sport event or an athletic lifestyle. For example, Person Fencing 🤺 and Skier ⛷️ sit alongside it in the same sports-and-activity family, while Snowboarder 🏂 and Person Golfing 🏌️ offer a way to build a sports lineup in a single message. If you want the male counterpart for a mixed team post, Man Golfing 🏌️♂️ shows how gendered variants work across this category.
How Is It Different From Other Water Polo Emojis?
The woman version specifies a female athlete, while the base Person Playing Water Polo emoji (🤽) is gender neutral and the man version depicts a male athlete.
Which one you choose depends on the message. Use the woman variant for women's teams, female players, and posts celebrating women in sport. Use the gender-neutral version when the gender is irrelevant or when you are talking about a mixed group. Using the specific variant shows intent and gives your post a clearer identity, which is especially valuable for women's sports content that often receives less visibility.
When Should You Avoid the Woman Playing Water Polo Emoji?
Avoid this emoji when your message has nothing to do with water polo, pool sports, or female athletes, because its meaning is specific and could confuse the reader.
It is also not the best choice for general swimming, since there are separate swimming emojis for that. Using a water polo figure for a casual dip or a beach day may suggest a competitive team sport the reader will not expect.
In formal or professional writing, such as official reports or business emails, emojis are usually best skipped. In a sports club newsletter or team announcement, however, the emoji is perfectly appropriate and adds friendly clarity.
Finally, if you do not know whether a person is a woman, consider the gender-neutral version rather than assuming. The variant should match who you are actually describing.
