People Wrestling Emoji

The People Wrestling emoji 🤼 shows two figures locked in a wrestling hold, and it means wrestling, grappling, or any head-to-head physical contest. People also use it figuratively for a struggle, a heated debate, or playful roughhousing between friends. It was added in Unicode 9.0 and is part of the People & Body category.

What Does the People Wrestling Emoji Mean?

The People Wrestling emoji means wrestling, and by extension any close, physical, back-and-forth contest between two people.

The official Unicode name is WRESTLERS, and the character sits at codepoint U+1F93C. Two figures face each other in a clinch, which captures the core idea of grappling sports: neither side is simply striking, both are working to gain leverage and control.

Because the image is so specific to wrestling, it works as a literal sport icon first. Its second life is metaphorical. When someone says they are wrestling with a problem, a decision, or a stubborn spreadsheet, the emoji gives that sentence a bit of visual humor.

Literal meanings

• Amateur and professional wrestling matches
• Grappling arts such as judo, jiu-jitsu, and sambo (used loosely)
• Tournament brackets, weigh-ins, and practice sessions

Figurative meanings

• Struggling with a difficult choice or task
• Friendly roughhousing, like siblings or pets tussling
• A competitive back-and-forth, such as a negotiation or an argument

How Do You Use the People Wrestling Emoji?

Use the People Wrestling emoji whenever you want to signal wrestling or a close contest, and keep the tone matched to the situation.

In sports contexts, it works as a quick label. A coach posting practice times, a school announcing a meet, or a fan reacting to a match can all drop it in without extra explanation. Readers recognize the pose immediately, even without text.

In casual chat, it often stands in for playful conflict. It reads as lighthearted far more often than aggressive, since the image shows a sport rather than a street fight.

Here are a few realistic examples:

• Varsity wrestling meet tonight at 6, bring your school spirit 🤼
• Me and the dog wrestling over the same sock again 🤼
• Currently wrestling with my budget and the budget is winning 🤼

What Does 🤼 Mean in Texting and on Social Media?

In texting and on social media, 🤼 usually means either a literal wrestling reference or a joking way to describe a struggle.

On sports accounts, you will see it paired with schedules, results, and highlight clips. Because the emoji is not tied to any single league, it appears in posts about high school, college, Olympic, and entertainment wrestling alike.

In personal posts, it is common for describing a tussle with something unglamorous. Someone wrestling with a stuck jar lid, a fitted sheet, or a tangled set of cables might use it for comic effect.

Among friends, it can also hint at playful rivalry. Two coworkers competing over who gets the last conference room, or siblings arguing about a game score, might use the emoji to keep the mood light.

Tone to expect

The tone is typically energetic and good-natured. It is less loaded than an emoji like a fist or a boxing glove, because wrestling imagery tends to suggest sport and effort rather than anger.

How Is the People Wrestling Emoji Different From Other Sports Emojis?

The People Wrestling emoji is unique because it shows two people in direct physical contact, while most sports emojis show a single athlete.

Compare it with Person Fencing, which also implies a duel between two competitors but shows only one fencer with a blade. Wrestling is closer, more tangled, and has no equipment in the picture.

Other individual-athlete emojis, such as Skier, Snowboarder, and Person Golfing, depict someone performing alone against terrain or a course. Wrestling stands out in the sports set because the opponent is part of the image. If you want a golfer in a male-presenting form, there is also Man Golfing, but those emojis tell a very different story from a clinch.

That two-person framing is why the emoji is also a natural fit for any story about two sides pushing against each other.

Does the People Wrestling Emoji Support Skin Tones and Gender Variants?

Yes, the People Wrestling emoji supports skin tone modifiers, and gendered versions exist as separate sequences.

Skin tone support means you can pair the base character with a modifier so the figures reflect different complexions. Support for these variations depends on your device and app, so test how it renders before relying on it in an important post.

Many platforms also offer men wrestling and women wrestling versions that are built from the base character plus gender modifiers. On systems that do not support a particular sequence, you may see the standard People Wrestling emoji instead, or a pair of separate symbols.

How Does the People Wrestling Emoji Look on Different Platforms?

The emoji looks broadly similar everywhere: two figures in a wrestling clinch. The art style, colors, and outfit details change from one platform to the next.

It is supported across the major systems. Apple devices show it on iOS 10.0+ and macOS 10.12+. Google supports it on Android 7.0+, Microsoft on Windows 10 Anniversary Update and later, and Samsung from One UI 1.0. Meta apps show it from WhatsApp 2.17+, and Twitter renders it with Twemoji 2.2+.

Since it arrived with Unicode 9.0 and Emoji 3.0, very old phones or operating systems may display a blank box or a question mark instead. If a friend reports seeing a missing symbol, an outdated OS is the most likely reason.

• Apple: iOS 10.0+, macOS 10.12+
• Google: Android 7.0+
• Microsoft: Windows 10 Anniversary Update+
• Samsung: One UI 1.0+
• WhatsApp: 2.17+
• Twitter/X: Twemoji 2.2+

Which Emojis Pair Well With 🤼?

The best pairings for 🤼 are emojis that add context about the sport, the result, or the mood.

• 🤼🏆 for a tournament win or championship announcement
• 🤼💪 for strength training, conditioning, or a tough match
• 🤼🔥 for an intense or heated rivalry
• 🤼😅 for a struggle you are only half winning
• 🤼🐶 for pets playing rough with each other

A short sequence can also tell a story. Pairing the wrestling emoji with a stopwatch, a medal, and a crying-laughing face quickly communicates a long practice, a result, and the emotional reaction without any extra words.

If you are translating a whole sentence into emoji, the Emoji Translator can suggest pairings, and the trending emojis page shows what people are using alongside sports symbols right now.

When Should You Avoid the People Wrestling Emoji?

Avoid the People Wrestling emoji when the topic is serious conflict, real violence, or a sensitive personal dispute, because the image can trivialize it.

Wrestling is a sport, but the picture still shows bodies in contact. In a message about a real fight, harassment, or a physical altercation, the emoji can come across as flippant. A plain written explanation is usually safer.

It is also worth being careful in workplace chats. Describing a tense meeting as wrestling with a colleague might be funny among close teammates, but it can sound unprofessional or accusatory in a formal thread.

Finally, avoid using it for sports it does not represent if precision matters. A boxing, karate, or martial arts announcement may be better served by a dedicated symbol or by words, since wrestling fans may read the emoji literally.
