The Man Playing Handball: Medium-dark Skin Tone emoji (🤾🏾♂️) shows a man in mid-throw with a medium-dark skin tone, and it means handball, team sports, and athletic competition. People use it to talk about playing or watching handball, celebrate a sporty win, or represent themselves in a sports-related message.
What Does the Man Playing Handball: Medium-dark Skin Tone Emoji Mean?
This emoji means a man playing handball, rendered with a medium-dark skin tone, and it stands for the sport of team handball and active, competitive play.
Handball is a fast team sport in which players pass, dribble, and throw a ball with their hands to score in the opponent's goal. The emoji captures that moment of action, usually showing a figure leaping or winding up for a throw.
The medium-dark skin tone is the fifth of the six skin tone options in the Fitzpatrick-based scale used by Unicode. It lets someone choose an image that reflects their own appearance, or the appearance of the person they are talking about, rather than the default yellow.
Beyond the literal sport, many people read it more broadly as a symbol of athleticism, effort, and teamwork. It is a good fit any time the point of the message is a player in motion.
What Are the Technical Details of This Emoji?
The emoji is a sequence of five Unicode codepoints that combine into a single image: U+1F93E, U+1F3FE, U+200D, U+2642, and U+FE0F.
- U+1F93E is the base character, PERSON PLAYING HANDBALL.
- U+1F3FE is the medium-dark skin tone modifier.
- U+200D is the zero width joiner, which links characters into one emoji.
- U+2642 is the male sign, which makes the person a man.
- U+FE0F is the variation selector that asks for emoji-style display.
The base handball character was added in Unicode 9.0, and this gendered, skin-toned version belongs to Emoji 4.0. Its category is People & Body, and its shortcode is :man_playing_handball_medium_dark_skin_tone:.
The full Unicode name is MAN PLAYING HANDBALL: MEDIUM-DARK SKIN TONE. Apple uses the same name for it.
How Do You Use the Man Playing Handball Emoji?
You use this emoji whenever a message is about handball, or about a man competing in a fast, physical team sport.
The most direct use is sports talk: match announcements, training plans, scores, and club chats. It also works in captions when you want to show yourself or a friend in the sport.
Example messages
- Practice moved to 7pm tonight, bring your own water 🤾🏾♂️
- We won the regional final 28-24! Best game of the season 🤾🏾♂️🏆
- Who is in for handball after work on Thursday? 🤾🏾♂️
Because the skin tone is part of the character, it is most natural when the emoji represents a real person, such as yourself, a teammate, or an athlete you are discussing.
What Does 🤾🏾♂️ Mean in Texting and on Social Media?
In texting and on social media, this emoji usually signals sport, activity, or an invitation to play, and it is rarely sarcastic or ironic.
On social platforms, it often appears in captions on game-day photos, gym and training posts, and team announcements. Players, coaches, and fans of handball clubs use it as a quick visual tag for the sport.
Some people also use it more loosely to mean going all out, throwing yourself into a task, or showing athletic energy. Even then, the sporty meaning stays in the background, so the reader will almost always understand it as athletic.
Since handball is especially popular in parts of Europe and in many other countries around the world, you may see the emoji more often in international sports conversations than in casual everyday chat in some regions.
How Does the Skin Tone Version Differ From the Default Emoji?
The only difference is the skin tone: this version shows medium-dark skin, while the default Man Playing Handball emoji uses a neutral yellow tone.
The meaning does not change. Choosing a skin tone is a way to personalize the emoji and make your messages feel more representative, which is part of why Unicode introduced modifiers for people emojis.
Many people pick the tone that matches their own, but there is no rule. You can use any tone, including the default, as long as you are comfortable with how it reads in context.
One practical point: the skin tone and the male sign are built into this single emoji, so you do not need to add anything extra. If you want a different tone or a different gender presentation, you would pick a different emoji from the set.
How Does the Man Playing Handball Emoji Look on Different Platforms?
The design varies by platform, but every vendor shows a man in a throwing or jumping pose with a ball, in a medium-dark skin tone.
This emoji is supported on the following platforms, according to the data for this page:
- Apple: iOS 10.2+ and macOS 10.12.2+
- Google: Android 7.1+
- Microsoft: Windows 10 Anniversary Update+
- Samsung: One UI 1.0+
- Meta: WhatsApp 2.17.10+
- Twitter: Twemoji 2.3+
Details such as the colors of the uniform, the style of the ball, and the exact pose differ from one vendor to the next. If you send this emoji to someone on an older device, they may see a fallback instead, such as the basic handball person followed by a skin tone square and a male sign.
Which Emojis Pair Well With 🤾🏾♂️?
The best pairings add emotion or context to the sport, such as celebration, effort, or spectating.
- 🏆 or 🥇: for wins and trophies.
- 👀 Eyes: for watching a match or noticing a standout play.

A short combination like Game tonight 🤾🏾♂️🔥 says a lot with very little text. If you want to experiment with sentences that mix words and emoji, the Emoji Translator can turn plain text into emoji suggestions.
When Should You Avoid the Man Playing Handball Emoji?
Avoid it when the topic is not about sport or physical activity, because it will look out of place and may confuse the reader.
It is also worth being thoughtful about the skin tone. Using a tone that clearly does not match you, in a context where it could look like you are speaking for or imitating a group, can come across badly. When in doubt, use your own tone or the default yellow version.
In formal or professional writing, such as official reports or emails to people you do not know well, a sports emoji is usually unnecessary. It fits better in casual messages, club newsletters, and social posts.
Finally, do not assume everyone knows handball. If your audience is mostly in a region where the sport is less common, the emoji might be read as a generic ball game or even as someone throwing something, so add a few words of context.
