The Hot Face emoji 🥵 means someone is overheated, sweating, or feeling intense heat, whether from weather, a fever, exercise, or a spicy meal. It shows a red, sweaty face with a drooping tongue. Online, it also doubles as a flirty way to say something is attractive or "too hot to handle."
What Does the Hot Face Emoji Mean?
The Hot Face emoji means the sender is physically overheated, and its flushed red skin, sweat drops, and hanging tongue make that message unmistakable.
Its official Unicode name is OVERHEATED FACE, though Apple and most platforms label it Hot Face. It sits in the Smileys & Emotion category (see the full Smileys & Emotion emoji collection) and carries the shortcode . Related search terms attached to it include feverish, heat, sweating, overheated, stroke, and burning.
Because the face is so exaggerated, it communicates discomfort quickly. You do not need extra words to explain that you are baking in a heatwave, stuck in a stuffy room, or finishing a brutal workout.
The Literal Meaning: Real Heat
The literal meaning covers any situation where your body temperature feels too high. That includes summer weather, a crowded subway car, a sauna, a hot kitchen, or a fever that has you kicking off the blankets.
The Figurative Meaning: Attraction
The figurative meaning is "that person is attractive" or "I am flustered by this." The same red, sweaty face that signals a heatwave also reads as being overwhelmed by someone's looks. Context decides which reading applies, and most readers pick up on it instantly.
How Do You Use the Hot Face Emoji?
You use the Hot Face emoji by placing it next to a message about heat, effort, or discomfort, usually at the end of a sentence or as a standalone reaction.
Here are realistic examples of how people actually write with it:
- The AC just died and it's 95 degrees in here 🥵
- Finished leg day and I can barely stand, I'm drenched 🥵
- This ghost pepper sauce was a mistake 🥵🔥
Notice that in each case the emoji backs up something the text already says. That is its strongest use: it adds emotional volume to a statement about temperature or exertion without needing a long explanation.
Using It as a Standalone Reply
Sending 🥵 alone works well as a reaction to a photo, a weather screenshot, or a story about a heatwave. A friend posts a thermometer reading of 104 degrees and your reply is just the emoji. The meaning is clear from the thread.
What Does 🥵 Mean in Texting and on Social Media?
In texting and on social media, 🥵 most often means either "I'm sweltering" or "that's attractive," and the surrounding conversation tells you which.
On weather and lifestyle posts, it is usually literal. People caption beach photos, festival crowds, and summer commutes with it. In fan communities and comment sections, it frequently signals attraction, as in a reaction to a celebrity photo or a stylish outfit.
In dating chats and flirty exchanges, it can carry suggestive undertones. A message like You in that jacket though 🥵 reads as a compliment with a flirtatious edge, not a complaint about the temperature.
Quick Tone Guide
- Next to weather, sports, or spicy food: literal heat.
- Under a photo of a person: attraction or admiration.
- In a private flirty thread: playful, sometimes suggestive.
- With a thermometer or sick emoji: fever or illness.
How Is the Hot Face Emoji Different From Other Sick or Unwell Emojis?
The Hot Face emoji shows heat and sweat specifically, while other face emojis in the same family show different symptoms like nausea, congestion, or injury.
If you are actually ill, a more specific emoji may serve you better. The Face With Thermometer emoji 🤒 signals a general fever or being sick in bed. The Face With Medical Mask emoji 😷 suggests illness or protective caution. The Sneezing Face emoji 🤧 points to allergies or a cold, and the Nauseated Face emoji 🤢 covers feeling queasy.
Hot Face stands apart because it is about temperature and flushed skin rather than a diagnosis. It can describe a fever, but it just as easily describes a sunny afternoon or a spicy dinner, which gives it much wider everyday use.
Which Emojis Pair Well With 🥵?
The best pairings reinforce the heat, the cause, or the relief you are looking for.
- 🥵🔥 for extreme heat, spicy food, or attraction.
- 🥵☀️ for summer weather and heatwaves.
- 🥵💦 for sweating after a workout or a hot day.
- 🥵🌶️ for spicy dishes that are too much.
- 🥵🧊 for desperately needing something cold.
Pairing carefully matters because some combinations shift the tone. Adding 💦 can push the meaning from a gym session toward innuendo depending on the conversation, so choose combinations that match what you actually intend to say.
How Does the Hot Face Emoji Look on Different Platforms?
The Hot Face emoji appears on every major platform as a red-faced character with a hanging tongue, but each vendor draws the details in its own style.
It was approved as part of Unicode 11.0 and Emoji 11.0 under the codepoint U+1F975. Because it is a newer emoji, older devices may show a blank box or question mark instead of the face. Support starts at these versions:
- Apple: iOS 12.1+ and macOS 10.14.1+
- Google: Android 9.0+
- Microsoft: Windows 10 version 1809+
- Samsung: One UI 1.0+
- WhatsApp: version 2.19+
- Twitter: Twemoji 11.1+
If a friend cannot see your emoji, they are probably running an outdated operating system. The emoji does not support skin tone modifiers, so it looks the same for everyone regardless of settings.
When Should You Avoid the Hot Face Emoji?
Avoid the Hot Face emoji in formal, professional, or sensitive contexts where its flirtatious double meaning could be misread.
In a work email or a message to a manager, a sweaty red face might be fine for a complaint about a broken air conditioner, but it can look unprofessional or even inappropriate if the topic is a person or a project. If you need to say a task was exhausting, plain words are safer.
Be careful in group chats with mixed audiences, such as family threads, because the attraction meaning is widely known. A comment like Grandma's new photo 🥵 would raise eyebrows. Also avoid using it to describe a serious medical emergency, since heat stroke is dangerous and a face emoji can understate it.
